Alex Zhao 

Managing Director & Head of Investment Banking, Southeast Asia, China International Capital Corporation (CICC)

 

Mr. Zhao is the Managing Director, Head of Investment Banking in Singapore to cover Southeast Asia.

 

Mr. Zhao is regarded as one of most experienced investment bankers in China. Since he joined CICC in 1999, he has advised many world-class corporations including China Unicom, Alcatel, Emersion, Huawei, China Life, TCL, PetroChina, China National Social Security Fund, New China Life Insurance and PCCW in various domestic and international equity/debt capital market transactions and mergers and acquisitions. He played an important role in helping his large Chinese SOE clients in transforming to market based business entities through capital market. He’s also highly experienced in cross-borders transactions involving both Chinese and foreign corporations.

 

Mr. Zhao is also highly influential in financial product innovations in China. He is Vice-chairman of CICC Financial Products Committee overseeing the firm’s overall product innovations and was head of Financial Products of CICC during 2008-2010. By overcoming various challenges from China’s regulatory regime and market conditions, he pioneered many phenomenal China-based financial innovations, including the first asset-backed securitization and first none performing loan ABS in the country, private placement of high-yield corporate bond, and a HK-listed ETF tracking China’s A-share market. These innovations have proved to be highly successful in helping the country’s development of financial market, and helped CICC consistently in the leading position in financial innovations. 

 

Before joining CICC, Mr. Zhao worked with Lazard in Asia in 1995 to 1999.

 

Mr. Zhao holds Ph.D in Economics from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and B.S in Management from University of Science and Technology of China.
