Pine River Capital Management L.P.
Pine River Capital Management L.P. was founded in early 2002 by Brian Taylor. Prior to Pine River's inception, Brian began his employment at EBF & Associates in 1988 as a trader, becoming head of the convertible arbitrage group in 1994, and was named a Partner in 1997 prior to his departure in 2002. He founded Pine River to pursue opportunities in global relative value trading and three former colleagues; Jeff Stolt (CFO), Aaron Yeary (Co-Portfolio Manager of the Pine River Fund) and Nikhil Mankodi (Co-Head of Asian Trading) joined him shortly after the launch. Tom Siering, another former colleague, joined the firm in 2006 as Head of Fundamental Strategies. Franklin Parlamis joined Pine River in 2007 as the Head of US Convertibles Trading and Steve Kuhn joined in 2008 as the Head of Fixed Income Trading. As the firm grew, teams were built around each of the strategy heads along with significant investments in infrastructure.
Beginning in 2002, the firm was located in Pine River, Minnesota, and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2003. In 2007, Pine River outgrew its headquarters and relocated to Minnetonka, Minnesota, just a few miles west of downtown Minneapolis. Pine River opened research and trading offices in London in 2004, Hong Kong in 2007, San Francisco and New York in 2008, and Austin in early 2013. In the summer of 2010, Pine River opened a research office in Beijing and in 2012 the firm opened a research office in Shenzhen. The Minnetonka office remains our headquarters and houses all of the control functions including: risk, accounting, settlements, treasury, client service, compliance, human resources and our internal counsel.
Over the course of the firm's history, it has become registered with several agencies. Pine River Capital Management L.P. became registered as a Commodity Pool Operator and a Commodity Trading Advisor with the US National Futures Association in May 2002. Pine River Capital Management (UK) Limited became authorized by the Financial Conduct Authority to manage investments in the UK in January 2004. Pine River Capital Management L.P. became registered as an investment advisor with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in January 2006. Pine River Capital Management (HK) Limited became licensed by the Securities and Futures Commission to manage assets in Hong Kong in March 2007. Pine River Capital Management L.P. became registered as a Foreign Institutional Investor in India in February 2008.
